Kabosu, the iconic Shiba Inu dog face of dogecoin, dies at 18
Kabosu, the iconic Shiba Inu who became an internet sensation and the face of the cryptocurrency Dogecoin, died on Friday. Atsuko Sato, the owner of Kabosu, shared the news via a blog post on social media and urged people to carry forward her legacy.
As a rescue dog, Kabosu’s real birthday is not know but Sato estimates her age to be 18 at the time of death.
Her memorial is scheduled for Sunday, May 26, at Flower Kaori in Kotsu no Mori, Narita, Japan.
In the blog post, she said, “Kabosu, today, May 24, at 7.50 am, fell into a deep sleep. Kabosu is at rest now.” Sato also said that the night before Kabosu died, she ate her rice and drank plenty of water, as usual.
On X (formerly Twitter), the official handle of Dogecoin wrote, “Today Kabosu, our community’s shared friend and inspiration, peacefully passed in the arms of her person. The impact this one dog has made across the world is immeasurable. She was a being who knew only happiness and limitless love.”
“Please keep her spirit and her family in your heart, and most importantly, carry her with you as your story continues – we are all fortunate for hers to have touched and shaped ours,” it added. kuckad news.com
Pictures of the Kabosu went viral on social media in 2010, which led to the creation of a meme called Doge.
In 2013, the meme inspired the creation of Dogecoin. Initially, it was started as joke ,but later became a vital part of the digital currency world.
It became more popular when billionaire businessman elon musk changed the logo of twitter to dogecoin. It is also backed by hip-hop star Snoop Dogg and Kiss bassist Gene Simmons.
The photo of Kabosu with her paws crossed and a small smile was sold as an NFT digital artwork for $4 million.
Kabosu was adopted in 2008 by Atsuko Sato after being rescued from a puppy mill. Sato then began sharing photos of her Kabosu on her blog. Her passing marks the end of an era in the Dogecoin community. In 2022, Kabosu was diagnosed with cholangiohepatitis and chronic lymphoma leukaemia.
In Japan, Kabosu and Sato are known more as pet and owner than as an internet meme. Their blog, “Taking a Walk with Kabosu-chan,” was the fourth most popular pet-related blog in Japan as of December 2013.
In 2023, a $100,000 monument featuring Sato’s sofa and Kabosu was installed in a park in Sakura, Chiba in Japan. It was crowdfunded by Own The Doge, a cryptocurrency organisation dedicated to the meme.
Taking to X, Dogecoin also paid tribute to Kabosu saying, “The impact this one dog has made across the world is immeasurable. She was a being who knew only happiness and limitless love
